ALONE IN HER APARTMENT, Selene eased the top off a bottle of beer and slumped into her brown swivel chair by the window. The view only faced the wet alley, but seeing outside and not her dingy apartment was a relief. Slow rivulets of rain slipped down the glass, distorting everything she saw. The panic was rising in her chest and she knew if she didn't quiet it down she'd start to overheat. Have another “episode” and risk drawing attention to herself.

“Screw it.” Getting up, she pushed the beer bottle onto the counter and dug around in a drawer for a sheet of paper and a pen. She leaned elbows onto the counter as she began her list.

Shaw.

Candary.

Vasnia.

Taniff.

. . .

She tapped the pen rhythmically on the counter.

Garren.

Neiko. She set a question mark after his name.

. . .

The Philips triplets.

Although, honestly, she didn't really have a full grasp on what they were capable of, only that they hated Magi-Corps and were at the perfect age to believe they could change the world with action. Teen boys at that. Risk wouldn't make them think twice.

Was this seriously all the people she had secured? She rolled her neck, trying to stretch the muscles which had tightened at her shoulders. She'd wasted too much time being friendly, easing in as if she were undercover, rather than being blunt and to the point. Hindsight: she should have actively recruited.

Damn. She sighed and rubbed her eyes with her palms. She thought she had more time.

A quick chug of her beer and Selene drew a line down the page. Time to think about Magi-Corps.

Why target the Near Street Apartments? Why the impoverished?

Crime, she wrote.

Possible, but where in Bellows didn't have crime? And who was to say their crime was magic related as opposed to somewhere else in the city? Well, probably it was, but still.

Dense population.

Defenseless.

A pounding on the door startled her and the pencil flipped out of her hands.

She swung the door open, one hand high on the trim, the other at her hip. A shot of adrenaline surged through her as she observed the woman standing before her with a clipboard, slicing a pen across the page through a name on the list. Selene Farrows. What the shit?

“Can I help you?” A tough grit in her voice. She didn't want to beat around the bush anymore.

The woman waved her pen around in a circle. “You live here?” She glanced at her paper. “Miss Farrows.”

Nothing about Near Street was ever formal, least of all people's names. “I keep coming back to the same spot and I sleep here, if that's what you mean.”

A thin smile broadened the woman's mouth, but clearly she wasn't amused. “That is exactly what I mean.” Tucking the clipboard under her arm, she extended a hand to shake. “Margo Tillis. I'm the new property manager.”

Selene didn't mirror the courtesy. No gloves, but the woman reeked of MC protocols and stiffness.

“I'm introducing myself to everyone in the building today and taking notes as to necessary repairs in each apartment.
